Ruby Rhod is one of my favorite characters in sci-fi ever because he is Luc Besson’s vision of the hetero sex symbol of the future: a flamboyant, emotionally labile man who wears skin-tight leopard print or decks himself in roses, a man who accessorizes with big jewelry and dabbles in cosmetics. And the ladies love him. Everything about him screams “gay” according to our stereotypes, but he’s portrayed as a 100% straight sexual dynamo.

Besson is one of the few directors I’ve seen who actually recognizes that our ideas of sexuality and gender performance might have changed drastically in the future.

i'm a super picky eater but i like the idea of going to thailand because even though i have to pay for a plane ride, everything there is super cheap. i'm just worried that i won't be able to find a lot of foods that i like to eat, and nutrition is important, obviously. do they have a lot, if any, american-style foods or any sorts of fruits or veggies that are typical in america?

oh. man. thai fruits and veggies are so. good. no. most of them aren’t the ones that are typical in america…but you can find those…especially if you are in a big city.

but really. don’t eat typical ones. eat thai ones. the mangosteen will change your life.

Do they actually eat pad thai in Thailand? Or is it like Chinese food, where what they serve in America is nowhere close to what they actually eat?

of course they do! gah. and it is fantastic.

but the also eat a ton of stuff that you would never see in a thai restaurant in america. like. if it is remotely possible that your body might be able to digest it…thai people will eat it.

So I'm planning on teaching English as a foreign language and although I want to go Spain most of all since I speak the language and lived there before and loved it I am also interested in Thailand. I know you teach through English but in day to day life is it hard to get by without Thai? I had some Spanish when I moved to Spain and a lot of people over there speak English but I still found it difficult at first so the idea of going somewhere with no knowledge of the language scares me.

it is scary and hard when you first get there…but it is scary and hard when you first get anywhere. thai people are so happy and loving and welcoming. they will want to practice english with you and help you with thai and they are so kind about all your mistakes. thai people are my favorite.

and. uh. supposedly thailand is vegan friendly (in response to your other question) because some monks are vegan…but practically…you have to work really really hard to not accidentally eat animal products.

did you learn to speak thai before going to thailand? i mean, it makes sense if you did, but i wasn't sure

nope. i didn’t know any thai before i got there. i learned while i was living there.
